Check your property's flood zone designation

The County’s Floodplain Management Program provides flood-related information, resources and services to realtors, lenders, insurance agents, and the general public, and can assist with checking a property’s flood zone designation, additional flood insurance data or elevation certificates.

Individuals or professionals looking for flood zone designations are encouraged to use the new online Flood Hazard Assessment Tool (http://www.hidlnr.org/eng/nfip/NfipHome.aspx) on the National Flood Insurance Program/Hawai’i State Web site or, to contact the County’s Floodplain Management Program, 808-961-8327, to find out if a property is in the Flood Hazard Area (FHA) as shown on the County’s current Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).

Floodplain Management can also help with other information or services such as:

  • Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) updates;
  • Additional flood insurance data for a site, such as the FIRM zone and the base flood elevation or depth, if shown on the FIRM;
  • Elevation certificates;
  • Status of North Hawaii, Kona, Puna, and East Hawaii flood projects
  • Arranging professional training on the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), elevation certificates, repetitive loss, the building permit process as it applies to the NFIP, flood-proofing and other flood-related topics;
  • County publications including:
  • Check Flood Hazards Before You Buy (published by the County’s Engineering Division)
  • Building Permits and Inspections (published by the County’s Building Division);

Or, download these publications at the County’s Flood Awareness Web site (http://dpw.co.hawaii.hi.us/) or from “Quick Links” on the County’s home page http://www.hawaii-county.com/).

The Floodplain Management Program is managed by the County’s Department of Public Works, 101 Pauahi St. #107, in Hilo.
