Construction on upgrades to Kea'au public water spigots ready to start
Friday, February 11, 2011 at 6:00PM Upgrades to the water service at the Kea‘au Transfer Station will begin Monday, Feb 14. The improvements will include adding spigots to accommodate three or more vehicles to refill at the same time; and lighting and additional parking stalls to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). April 12 is the scheduled completion date.
The water spigots and the transfer station will be open during construction. However, contractor Ludwig Construction Inc. is advising residents that construction activity may at times alter access and traffic patterns to the facility. The Departments of Water Supply and Public Works ask users for their kokua during construction to keep our Big Island ‘Ohana safe.
The project is expected to cost $158,000. Of that cost, 93 percent is being funded by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The balance of the funding will come from County of Hawai‘i.
Upon completion of the project, the Kea‘au Transfer Station will reopen under the name Waipuna, which means "spring water."
